Woods Creek Park is a nice stop-over
for sliding or swinging.
Time spent along the Children's Play
Trail at Boxerwood Gardens is the
ultimate in back-to-nature imaginary
play. Dress the kids accordingly to
let them make mud pies, splash in
the shallow stream and explore the
greater garden. Be on the lookout for a
giant chair in the field, inviting swings
beneath a mature canopy of green,
and the fairy forest, where children are
invited to add to the magic.
The Appalachian Trail meanders

north to south along the Blue Ridge
Mountains, and our Appalachian Trail
Communities of Buena Vista and
Glasgow offer basic services to hikers,
such as internet access at the libraries,
and shelter and showers at local parks.
Rock scrambling at Devil's
Marbleyard is no small feat, but the
vantage point from the top (or even
near the top) is worth the effort. The
Antietam Quartzite boulder field is
strewn across a mountainside near the
James River Face Wilderness Area,
below the Appalachian Trail, and near
the James River.
Natural Bridge State Park is
home to the iconic 215-foot limestone
natural bridge, a National Historic
Landmark. Seven trails course
through the park, including the
most prominent Cedar Creek Trail
leading to Salt Peter Cave, Lost
River and Lace Falls. Families will
love the new Children's Discovery
Area of experiential play, as well
as the self-guided Kids in Parks
Track Trail and the Nature Explore
Outdoor Classroom. Play clothes are
suggested for the ultimate imaginative
engagement with nature.
