The Historic Masonic Theatre
'A Better Life for All of Us'
Once upon a time, it was the Masonic
Lodge and Opera House. Musicals, operettas,
vaudeville shows and traveling cowboy stars
graced its first-floor stage. The second-floor
balcony seats were designated as AfricanAmerican seating in the depths of the Jim
Crow era. And the third floor was the elegant
meeting hall for the founding Masonic Order,
light-filled and looking out over the town of
Clifton Forge and the mountains beyond.
After decades of hard use and changing
hands, the theatre went dark. It fell to a group
of hardworking volunteers headed by the late
John E. Hillert to raise the millions of dollars
needed to renovate and reopen the theatre.
In July 2016, after months of historically
accurate renovation, the Historic Masonic
Theatre opened its doors again. The Masonic
has once again become a gathering place for
residents and visitors, young and old.
