"We had been looking for an opportunity to expand to the Jackson River
for the last five or so years and really jumped at the chance to manage the
new facility in Intervale. We really feel like the Alleghany Highlands as a
whole is an untapped market in terms of outdoor recreation, and we're
excited to help draw more people to the area and enjoy the beauty we
have here. It can really turn into an outdoor mecca"

nation. The Jackson has even been dubbed
the "Yellowstone of the East" by some anglers
due to the river's consistent temperature and
abundance and diversity of wildlife. One
such example would be Derrick Barr, owner of
Escatawba Farms Fly Fishing, a local outfitter
that offers fly-fishing trips and lessons on a
private stretch of Dunlap Creek. "We have
such a unique area here, between the Blueway
and the trails and the large percentage of
National Forest land that we are able to offer
an experience that not many other places can
match. People from Richmond or Northern
Virginia can hop on the interstate and within
three hours feel like they're in another world,
either fishing or hunting or floating," Barr
said. "The Alleghany Highlands is a wellkept secret but the word is starting to get
out." That sentiment was echoed by many
locals and business owners, who have seen
an uptick in the number of guests who have
come to the area simply to enjoy all that
nature has to offer.
One business that hopes to capitalize on
the increased traffic to the area is Alleghany
Outdoors, a kayak, canoe, tube and bicycle
outfitter that will be serving the Jackson
River from the Intervale area and plans on
