federal and state permits and no fear of revenuers-the
Vachons are creating small-batch spirits at Mill Town Artisan
Distillery, in partnership with a long-time family friend, Bryan
Egland.
Natives of North Idaho, Victor and Jessie Vachon manage
the vision and the day-to-day operations at Mill Town. They
began with an 80-proof corn whiskey (Victor Vachon has
long been enamored of whiskey, and that seems an appropriate place for a moonshine-inspired distillery to begin).
That was followed by a 120-proof corn whiskey (the brothers
would approve), then by an 80-proof white rum (Jessie
Vachon and Bryan Egland's favored spirit).
Not content with the work that a distillery requires, the
Vachons began farming, using Victor's parents' little family
farm. They grew barley to produce a true "farm-to-bottle"
vodka. What they don't grow, the Mill Town proprietors say,
they source locally.
Next up? Legal Idaho gin. No bathtub necessary. What
would the moonshiners think?

44 North Vodka, boise
Idaho's southern border runs along latitude 44 north, and
the distillery by that name supports and celebrates the state.
Using Idaho's agricultural wealth, 44 North Vodka creates
products using potatoes, wheat and all-natural fruits.
The company's Idaho Potato Vodka is made from Burbank

and Russet potatoes by Distilled Resources, Inc.; the Magic Valley Wheat
Vodka from Brundage winter wheat; and the fruit-flavored vodkas are made
with all-natural Idaho mountain huckleberries, Rainier cherries and
Sunnyslope nectarines. All are made with Rocky Mountain spring water.
44 North vodkas are sold in dozens of states throughout the U.S., from
Alaska to Florida to New York. Owner Ken Wyatt, who lives part-time in
Boise, says that his company's focus is on the Northwest. The products are
recognized by Buy Idaho, The Idaho Potato Commission, The Idaho Wheat
Commission, and Idaho Preferred. The business also makes donations to
community organizations.
"Our success," Wyatt told Inlander magazine, "is tied to one thing in
particular: It's because people in the Pacific Northwest are very interested
in products with real provenance." And nothing says Idaho "provenance" like
a potato.

8 Feathers distillery, boise
Talk about team spirit! Long-time friends teamed up to start 8 Feathers
Distillery, each bringing distinct talents and passion for quality to the business: Marjie Lowe as event manager at Fortune 500 companies; Sandee Price
in marketing and advertising; Greg Lowe in technology; Larry Price in sales
and management; and Rick McKinney as an engineer. They met, caught the
whiskey bug (who knew it was contagious?) and decided to make and market
their own distilled spirits.
Though the friends aren't native to Idaho, they were eager to support
their new home.
"It was our goal to make this an Idaho product," Larry Prices says.
