Help Save the Tree that Once Ruled
8TH ANNUAL CHESTNUT RESTORATION CELEBRATION

of the American Chestnut Foundation will hold
its 8th annual Chestnut Restoration Celebration
on Saturday, October 14, at the Glenn C. Price
Research Laboratory in Meadowview.
The event, from 1-5 p.m., will offer not only
fresh chestnuts and chestnut beer, but also a
chance to be a part of the restoration of the tree
that once dominated the Virginia mountains
as well as the Appalachians in general.
Visitors will also be able to take a hayride
through the orchard where where blightresistant trees are being developed.
The American Chestnut Foundation is
dedicated to bringing back the tree eliminated
by a blight that began in 1904 in New York,
and within about 40 years had largely killed
the tree, which in many areas represented 25
percent of the hardwoods in the forest.
