DAVID ANGELL'S FAVORITE ROUTES
THREE GREAT RUNS
David Angell trains on a variety of running routes in the Roanoke Valley. Here are three of his favorites for long runs
and speed workouts.
Wildwood Road and Green Hill
Park Loop, Salem
The original Star City Half
Marathon course, Roanoke
Hanging Rock Battlefield Trail,
Salem
Length: 13-18 miles, depending on
the finishing spot. The loop starts at
Roanoke College, follows Wildwood
Road, and loops back to Salem's
Main Street. Then, the route heads
to Green Hill Park in Salem and
loops back along the Roanoke River
Greenway.
Length: 13.1 miles. The route begins
at River's Edge, heads to downtown
Roanoke, then weaves down Crystal
Spring Avenue and up Franklin
Road, back to Crystal Spring Avenue
and around Wasena Park.
Length: About 2 miles one way, but
Angell often runs it back and and
forth, four to five times, for a total of
8-10 miles.
"It's great for a long run and has
a lot of variety without having to
repeat anything," Angell says.
KING NEPTUNE ADMIRES
David Angell won the USA
Track & Field National Masters
8K Championship at Virginia
Beach this year.
Angell won four USA Track & Field National Masters Championships in the 8K (4.9 miles) and 10K
(6.2 miles) in 2017 and this year. He also notched
the 5K national masters championship in Atlanta in
August. Last year, he won the USATF Masters Grand
Prix, which involves competing in a series of national
championship races across the country and earning
points for placing, and he likely will win it again this
year, based on his total points as of Aug. 18. Masters
is a division for runners 40 and older.
"It is a mixture of ability, hard work and desire,"
says Paul Carlin, a runner and a self-employed writer who blogs about USATF masters racing and is a
consultant contracted with the organization. "David
has all three qualities in abundance. David's ability to
compete and not give up mean that he will try any
race and give it his all."
This never-give-up spirit is Angell's hallmark, and
it is key to his consistent success.
"It's a course that a lot of people
probably don't remember and
where I ran my first half back in
2000," Angell says. "It was a hilly and
challenging course and is still great
for getting in a longer effort with
some hills."
It's a crushed cinder trail that
extends south along Kessler Mill
Road.
"The soft cinder surface is great for
recovery runs and really helps if
the legs are feeling beat up. It can
also be a great place for some hard
tempo runs." -JKB
After high school, he went to Roanoke College
where he was a top distance runner on the cross
country and track teams.
While competing for the Maroons, Angell won the
Old Dominion Athletic Conference championships
five times in cross country and indoor and outdoor
track. This included a surprising comeback to win
the ODAC track championship in the 5,000 meters
as a senior. Just months prior to the win, an injury
sidelined him for the entire indoor track season.
In 1999, Angell's senior year, Roanoke College
named him male athlete of the year.
His pure love of the sport and competing was evident in his work ethic and his enthusiasm at the
starting line, says Finn Pincus, former head cross
country and track coach at Roanoke College. Pincus recalls Angell and his teammates screaming and
squealing loudly while standing at the starting line
for cross country races.
"When you hear that, you say 'these guys are passionate about this,'" Pincus says.
After graduating from Roanoke, Angell took a job
as a software engineer at Valcom, a designer and
manufacturer of electronics, telecommunications
systems, visual messaging, and more in Roanoke
MASSACHUSETTS WIN
David Angell defended his
2017 10K Masters win this
year.
