Mountain Lake is no longer truly a lake, it's
true. But exploring the marsh around the pond
that remains has become an interesting pastime
for birders, naturalists and amateur archeologists.
Mountain Lake Lodge's 2,600 acres offer a multitude
of diversions, from disc golf to bocce ball, scavenger
hunts and orienteering to cross country skiing.

In western Giles County, a new biking and motor
sport adventure park has popped up. Named Kairos, translating as "creating quality moments," the
1,515-acre Glen Lyn property has than 40 miles of
trail from the New River into West Virginia that can
be explored by mountain bike, ATV, motorcycle, or
horseback. Polaris RZR ATVs are available to rent.

TRAIL RUNNING EVENTS
Eastern Divide Ultra 50k, mid-June . This grueling
trail race runs uphill from the Cascades to Mountain
Lake. The point-to-point course passes waterfalls
and runs among old growth hemlocks on its ascent
of Butt Mountain.

Hell Climb 10k, early July Runners ascend more
than 1,800 feet in this 6.2-mile hill climb from the
base of Mountain Lake to the its summit.
