"We care about the environment, and are excellent
stewards. We treasure the woods and mountains in the
same way a hiker, bird-watcher, or naturalist does, we
just like to experience them from the seat of a bike."
In the past 10 or 15 years, about 20 such clubs and
organizations have been established throughout the
Virginia mountains. The smaller have around 100
members; the larger, more than 500. In Blacksburg,
there is the New River Valley Bicycle Association.
In Roanoke, the Roanoke International Mountain
Biking Association. Lonesome Pine Cycling hails
from Big Stone Gap. The Winchester Wheelmen
from Winchester. The list goes on.
Invariably, the groups work with local
governments and entities to establish trails.
Wherever a biking organization exists, you can
bet there's a trail system in the works nearby.
Most partnerships are overwhelmingly positive.
For example, in far-southwest Virginia, the city
of Norton is working with Lonesome Pine to
develop Flag Rock Area Trails at 4,230-foot

High Knob. Eight miles of single-track are
currently installed, with another 22 miles in the
works. According to the city's website, the trail is a interconnectivity. Meanwhile, as members began to
part of a larger initiative to attract outdoor tourism. have children, and those children grew into schoolAlthough group-members collectively numbered aged riders, the sport experienced an unprecedented
in the thousands, at first, there wasn't a lot of expansion. Naturally, some of the kids got serious.
