Hikers can head to New River Trail State Park,
Claytor Lake State Park, and Gatewood Park
for forest paths.
For a treasury of diverse wildflowers and
songbirds, head to Wildwood Park, tucked
into a narrow ravine off Radford's Main
Street. A honeycomb of footpaths, some
mountain-goat steep, radiate up the banks
of Connelly's Run. A travertine waterfall drops

a new coating of limestone as it splashes down
the northern cliff. On the shaley left side,
asters, bergamot, and yellow sneezeweed
sprout from the hillside. On the shady right
bank, spring beauties, larkspur, trillium, and
bloodroot hide in the damp forest. Riverway Trail, the backbone of the path system,
follows Connelly's Run to the New River at
Bisset Park.

HORSEBACK RIDING
Winterfrost Farm at Radford keeps its
horses busy year-round. That's part of
the rehabilitation program for the gentle,
rescued steeds. Trail rides, lessons,
bir thday par ties, even a horseback
Easter egg hunt provide work for these
good steeds. For folks who bond with

their mount, there's even a horse leasing
program designed to help cover the cost of
care for a rescue horse and allow the lessor
daily riding privileges. The farm includes
instruction with the guided rides over their
