FTER A DECADE IN HUMAN RESOURCES,

Eva Beaule was itching for a change,
partly because she traveled a lot and
wanted to spend more time with
her husband, Mike, who had already retired. But
something else was bugging her too. College-bound
high school students like her nephew couldn't find
part-time work in her hometown of Mendota,
Virginia because most of the businesses had
disappeared-just another sign that the former
tobacco village was going up in smoke.
"It was becoming a lost community," says Beaule,
63, owner of Adventure Mendota River Outfitter.
"All the things that I was used to growing up were
gone. We were left with basically a post office and a

community center that was very old with a library
in it."
So Beaule wondered: How could she quit her job
but still make some money, help the young people
she cared about, and revitalize her birthplace at
the same time?

I had never been in a kayak
before, and I thought,

'People will
pay to do this.

I'm onto something.'
