GET MUSIC BY CANOE
Franklin County Parks & Rec is teaming up with
Rocky Mount's Harvester Performance Center to
create Concerts by Canoe, on July 20 at the Twin
Ridge Recreation Area on Philpott Lake.
Participants need to bring their own canoe,
kayak, SUP or tube. The band Five Mile Mountain Road will perform on a floating stage, to a
floating audience. Food truck arrives at 5, and
show begins at 6. Be sure to bring your life jacket
as well.

THE ROANOKE AREA found itself in

some pretty good company in May,
when the International Mountain
Bicycling Association awarded three
Silver-Level IMBA Ride Center
designations, two in Colorado and
one here in the Roanoke area.
Roanoke is now one of just 30
IMBA Ride Centers nationwide. And
Roanoke's Silver places it ahead of the
other two Virginia centers, as both
Harrisonburg and Richmond are
Bronze-level centers.
The Mill Mountain and Carvins Cove

trail systems were noted among a network of singletracks "that deliver great
riding for every ability level," according
to IMBA, whose criteria for designations include "extensive trail networks,
masterfully designed for . . . every skill
level," as well as "trail systems that
are integrated, well-designed and
embraced by the surrounding communities."
Area tourism and economic development officials are now referring
to our area as "America's East Coast
Mountain Biking Capital." -KR

GET BALLOONY
The annual Balloons Over Rockbridge 5K trail
run/walk on July 7 takes place at the Virginia
Horse Center outside of Lexington. The event offers views of the mountains as well as of hot air
balloons launching and flying high overhead as
part of the Balloons Over Rockbridge event. The
run benefits Veterans Support group TeamRWB.
org, and is a family-friendly event. Balloons Over
Rockbridge offers live local music, beer/wine
tents, kids' activities and more.

CARVINS COVE
The preserve's 60 miles
of trails, at all levels,
were a major factor in
the IMBA Silver Award.

GET SWIMMING
The "best dam swim in Virginia" comes up
August 4 at Lake Moomaw in Covington. The
one-mile, open-water event is from Cole's point
toward Gathright Dam and back. Swimmers
must be 18 years or older, and awards are
presented to the top three finishers in five-year
brackets.
Swimmers will depart in waves of 10 or fewer,
one minute apart. Swimmers must have a U.S.
