The Jackson River has nearly 30 miles winding through the
Alleghany Highlands. The Jackson meets the Cowpasture River to form
the headwaters of the James River. Douthat State Park, one of Virginia's
oldest state parks, offers Douthat Lake, a 50-acre lake with swimming,
boating and seasonal trout fishing. Lake Moomaw has miles of
undeveloped, wooded shoreline perfect for exploring by canoe or kayak
yet large enough for sailing and motor boats.
The Alleghany Highlands of Virginia is home to one of the country's
most exceptional historic landmarks, Humpback Bridge. Built in 1857, it
is the oldest surviving arched, covered bridge in the United States.
