JOSHUA MCCARTHER, 24GRILLE IN THE
WESTIN BOOK CADILLAC
It seems that 24Grille likes mixing up more than
drinks: a modern menu in one of Detroit's most historic grand hotels; culinary creativity and family-oriented service; fine dining with a casual approach; locally
sourced ingredients in made-from-scratch dishes that
blend unexpectedly welcome ingredients-like Lobster Truffle Mac & Cheese and Kona Crusted Ribeye.
Or as bar manager Joshua McCarthur explains,
"24Grille is a place suited for the four-diamond hotel.
It's elegant, but at the same time it's not stiff. It's a fun
place with a beautiful atmosphere, high-end clientele
who like to relax with just a little something to take the
edge off."
When McCarthur began working behind the bar
at 24Grille, he created some cocktails that have become customer favorites. One of these has a fun story behind it: "My wife has a huge family with a lot of
women," he says. "I'm the only bartender in the family, so at events, I'm the one mixing up drinks. I came
up with the Lemon Pomegranate, and all the women
love it." He put the drink on the menu at the 24Grille,
with a sugar rim for added enjoyment. "People go crazy over it."
Another popular drink, Simply Divine, mixes
Grey Goose, St. Germaine, lime juice and grapefruit
juice, garnished with a lime, for a flowery grapefruit
taste and a pleasing complement of colors. The Elderflower Vesper, a James Bond-like martini, blends
Tanqueray, Ketel One and St. Germaine, garnished
with lemon peel, for the sophisticated crowd. Also a
guest favorite is Sweet Amaretto, a perfect touch of

almond essence mixed with Lot No. 40 Rye Canadian
Whisky, lime juice and simple syrup.
Before bartending, Joshua McCarthur worked in
the medical field as a home health aide. "When my
last patient died," he recalls, "I didn't want to do it
anymore." He discovered that he enjoyed working in
the restaurant industry.
He cut his teeth as a bartender slinging drinks
at a high-end restaurant. "Once I learned, it became
so much fun, like a race against the machine. Servers liked me, too, because they didn't have to wait for
their orders." He's slung a few drinks since then, in
Houston, Atlanta and now Detroit.
"There's so much to enjoy about bartending," he
says. "You meet so many different people. When people are here, they don't have a wall up-you come
to a bar to tear down that wall. And I love being challenged-someone says, 'Make me a drink that tastes
like bacon,' and being able to do it ... A bartender is
definitely a creator. You get to create every day."
But it's 24Grille itself that seals the deal. There's
the beautiful atmosphere and tall windows; there's
the clientele-the regulars and the out-of-towners,
everyday people and celebrities. McCarthur recalls
Detroit sports teams and their opponents ("We get
a majority of the Tigers' opponents, all of the Red
Wings' opponents, the majority if not all of the Pistons' opponents and the Lions before every home
game), plus well-known guests like Bon Jovi, Hillary
