ANOTHER
50 YEAR
CELEBRATION!
The Tigers' World Series win over the St.
Louis Cardinals back in 1968 was a turning
point for the city of Detroit, and a lifetime
sports moment for some of us. This issue is
built around celebrating the 50th
anniversary of that victory, and also
includes many ways to help celebrate it!

4 PURE SPIRITS

W

elcome to the second issue of Pure Spirits, a
publication brought to you free of charge, by
the Michigan Spirits Association. In our first
issue, published in 2017, we timely celebrated the 50th Anniversary of The Michigan Spirits Association (MSA), and
now in 2018, we continue the theme of celebrating 50th
Anniversaries, by celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the
Detroit Tigers World Series Victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in 1968.
The '68 Series gave the city and the entire metropolitan area reason to celebrate after the tough year it endured
in '67. Celebrate it did, as spirits sales soared and bars and
restaurants prospered. The '68 series may just be the turning point that began the true renaissance of the City of
Detroit-it may have taken 50 years, but we may be finally
enjoying the fruits of a seed the Tigers planted in 1968.
My first supplier position in the spirits industry was
with Brown-Forman and at one of the first National Sales
Meetings that I attended, the President of the company,
Mike Keyes, played a video that included clips of the '68
World Series with Mickey Lolich jumping into Bill Freehan's arms after Mickey won his third game of the series,
and Game 7, giving the Tigers the Series victory after coming back from being down 3 games to 1, over the favored St.
Louis Cardinals. I was surprised that they would show that
clip at this meeting almost 40 years later, but I then learned
that Mike was a Detroiter who grew up with the Tigers, so I
introduced myself to Mike that day and told him that I was
probably the only other person in the room that appreciated that clip as much as he did. Mike was gracious enough
to share his story with us in this issue-a kid from Detroit
who worked his way up and has done very well in the spirits
business.

Also in this issue, Dan Leach, the well-known voice on
"97.1 The Ticket" speaks with some of the '68 Tigers about
that season and their memories of it. New bartenders and
their favorite cocktail recipes are also in this issue, and
then, we wanted to share a perspective from the retail
side of the spirits business so we spoke with Jon Bogema,
the Spirits buyer for all Meijer Stores, and to Chris Kashat
from Keg & Wine, and Cliff Denha from The Wine Palace,
two great independent stores with some of the best spirits
selections in the Metro Detroit area. Many thanks to Mike,
Dan, Jon, Chris and Cliff for sharing their stories.
We hope that you enjoy reading the interviews and articles in this issue, and enjoy sampling many of the recipes
throughout the magazine. Have some fun with this month's
special '68 Tigers quiz and sign up for a chance to win a gift
card also. The MSA takes the responsible consumption of
spirits very seriously and asks that you do also-while I'm
happy to lead the promotion of responsible consumption
of spirits in Michigan, I'm equally happy for those who
abstain from alcohol for their own personal reasons, and
proud of my friend Dan Leach who recently celebrated
seven years of being dry. That is why we carry pieces such
as this issue's one on Talking to Kids, so everyone can celebrate responsibility together!
On behalf of the Michigan Spirits Association, enjoy responsibility, and if you have any suggestions or comments,
please share them with us on Facebook at facebook.com/
mispiritsassoc or by emailing us at: info@msaspirits.org
Sincerely,

T. Mitchell
