TALKING TO KIDS ABOUT ALCOHOL
Impairs judgment and leads to other
problems.
"Drinking can lead to poor decisions about
engaging in risky behavior, including drinking
and driving, sexual activity (such as unprotected sex), and aggressive or violent behavior," the
NIH report asserts. Along with those decisions,
youth are more likely to be victims of or carry
out physical and sexual assaults after drinking.
Similarly, drinking is associated with trouble in school, problems with the law, and the
use of other illegal substances. Although some
may argue chicken-and-egg effect, it certainly
seems logical that cerebral damage and impaired judgment caused by drinking can harm
a teen's ability to function at his or her best.
Causes many injuries and deaths.
The Substance Abuse and Mental
Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) reported that in 2011, 188,000 people
under age 21 visited an emergency room
for alcohol-related injuries.
The Centers for Disease Control and Pre-

vention estimates that alcohol, on average, is
a factor in the deaths of nearly 4,500 young
people under age 21 annually: from motor
vehicle crashes, homicide, alcohol poisoning, falls, burns, drowning, and suicide.
UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF PARENTS
The good news is, parents really do have
an influence on their kids' decisions. According to SAMHSA, "Research shows that
parents are the No. 1 reason young people
decide not to drink." The federal agency
recommends beginning the conversation
about alcohol as early as 9 years old.
Parents can help kids avoid alcohol
problems by discussing with them the dangers of drinking. After all, those are conversations they're probably not having with
their friends.
Modeling positive behavior is likewise
important. Research demonstrates that
kids who have a parent who binge drink are
more likely to binge drink themselves.

the law and to support the safety and
well-being of residents of and visitors
to Michigan.
In pursuit of these goals, MSA advocates for the prevention of underage
drinking through vigilant enforcement of state law and strict penalties
for violations.
The Michigan Liquor Control Commission provides signs and literature and
supports training programs to assist
retailers in preventing underage alcohol possession and consumption.
It also supports organizations like
the Century Council, which provides
prevention and education programs
to help liquor licensees become familiar with alcohol-related dangers
and laws, and the Michigan Coalition
to Reduce Underage Drinking.
