Pure Spirits Michigan Q4 2019 - 29

* Sleeping off your drinks isn't a magic bullet either. Your body can only metabolize a certain amount
of alcohol each hour-possibly even less when you're
asleep-so there may be plenty remaining in your system when you wake up, enough to affect your judgment
and reaction time.

RESPECT UNDERAGE DRINKING LAWS.
The legal drinking age isn't merely a throwback to
Puritanical times. Instead, underage drinking laws protect young people from harm since their bodies, brains
and judgment are still developing. Alcohol use, especially heavy drinking, can cause long-term negative consequences to minors, particularly to their developing brains.
On top of that, young people are especially vulnerable to increased risk-taking that can result in negative
emotional, physical and sexual experiences.

NEVER DRIVE UNDER THE INFLUENCE.

* Alternate each alcoholic beverage with an enjoyable
non-alcoholic drink like kombucha, lime and tonic, a mocktail or just plain water.
* When going to a party where chances are high that you'll
"enjoy yourself" just a little too much, take public transportation to the event, thus totally eliminating the temptation to
drive home.
* Eat beforehand. Alcohol hits the system more quickly if
there's no food in the stomach, since it enters the intestines
and thence the blood stream more quickly. Even better, eating
might alleviate your "hunger" to quickly knock back a few.

KNOW THE FACTS.
Not all "sober up" myths are true, so don't count on them
to keep you safe.
* Coffee and energy drinks might make you feel more
alert, but they don't truly counteract alcohol. In fact, some
studies indicate that caffeine mixed with alcohol may even
increase risky behaviors as well as side effects such as heart
palpitations.
* Eating food merely extends the amount of time that the
alcohol takes to absorb into your system. On the other hand, if
you're putting food into your mouth, you're not drinking, and
it may help you feel satisfied faster!

Under Michigan law, it is illegal to drive a car or
boat while intoxicated or impaired by alcohol, as measured by a bodily alcohol content of 0.08 or more. As
with underage drinking laws, the root of this law lies in
reality, not in some pious attempt at control. According
to Mothers Against Drunk Drivers, drunk driving is the
number one cause of death on American roadways. A
drunk-driving crash injures someone every two minutes and kills someone every 51 minutes.
So you have a choice. On the responsible side, you
can: 1) drink moderately, or 2) not drive home if intoxicated (either stay put or find a ride). On the irresponsible side, you can risk becoming a drunk-driving statistic, paying with jail time, fines, suspended license, your
life or someone else's life.

BE A RESPONSIBLE HOST.
Essential checkboxes on your party-planning
checklist include:
* A key drop-box with a sobriety check before guests
can retrieve their keys to drive home.
* Taxicab phone numbers.
* Plenty of food, water and non-alcohol and low-alcohol drink options.
Don't consume alcohol in an unauthorized place.
If you take outside alcohol into a business or venue
that doesn't allow it, you're not just risking penalties on
yourself-you could put a brewery, winery or other establishment out of business, which affects owners, employees and vendors and these people's families, too.
Given the amazing distilleries, wineries and breweries and the stellar bars and bartenders, there's much
to enjoy about today's alcohol industry. Keep the fun
alive with conscious imbibing!
