Welcome to the 2019 Holiday edition of the Michigan Spirits Association Pure Spirits magazine. We
have packed this issue with a great deal of information covering all aspects of spirits, with the hope that
you find what you need to help make this holiday
season an enjoyable and safe one! Check out some of
the newest spirits brands to enter the State of Michigan along with some great cocktail suggestions we
are certain you will enjoy.
Before I get too far along, I want to take a brief
moment to thank and welcome members of the Michigan Liquor Control Commission. First, let me thank
both Andy Deloney and Teri Quimby for the incredible contributions they each made to the commission,
and in turn the spirits industry in the state of Michigan. They were both a pleasure to work with, and
our association and members appreciate all they did
to help grow the industry in a safe and responsible
manner.
As they leave on to the next phases of their careers, we welcome two new members to join the Michigan Liquor Control Commission; we are pleased to
welcome an old friend, Pat Gagliardi, and Geralyn
Lasher to the MLCC. Pat will fill the position of Chairman on the commission and all of us at the MSA are
pleased to welcome him and look forward to working
closely with him once again. Pat is no stranger to the
commission having served under Governor Granhom
in the past.
Change is not only happening in the state level but continues to play an instrumental role in our

industry in many ways. Innovation continues to help
shape the industry and often accounts for much of
what drives drinking trends. A big trend in years past
has been flavored spirits. This first played an important role in the vodka category, helping to bring both
new consumers as well as former vodka consumers
back into the category with incredible and often creative flavors. Today this innovation or "change" in
what consumers buy is evident in the flavored whiskey category. Flavored whiskey has helped to introduce both new and old whiskey brands to consumers that would have once never considered drinking
brown spirits. A few of the brands that have had recent success are Crown Royal Peach, Jim Beam Vanilla, Jack Daniel's Apple and Skrewball, a new brand in
the category with a peanut butter flavored whiskey.
Lastly, in this issue you will learn about the Craft
Distilling industry in the state of Michigan and how
what was once a small segment of spirits production
is quickly becoming an important part of not only
what consumers drink but an important part of the
State's economy and success. Michigan is home to not
only some of the best craft spirits produced around
the country but some of the most successful and we
are proud to have many of them as members.
Sincerely,

Sam Awdish
President, Michigan Spirits Association
