CHEERS TO MORE BEER
Heavy Seas Beer. When life gives you a tavern, make
beer. Or so it turned out for Heavy Seas founder,
Hugh Sisson, who was diverted from his career track
in theater when his father handed him the keys to the
family tavern, aptly named
Sisson's. In order to differ-

to make the tavern a beer
destination. After all, he had

abroad in England, where
he experienced traditional

In 1984, Hugh Sisson
and his father decided to
take it up a notch and brew their own beer at the pub.
But first, they had to work with the Maryland legislature
to legalize brewpubs. Sisson's became Maryland's
first brewpub in August 1989. In 1994, Sisson left to
form Clipper City Brewing Co., now crafting the Heavy
Seas beers.

Ales and lagers include year-round beers, a range
of styles from the easy-drinking Pounder sessionable
pilsner to Double Cannon double IPA, and limited
releases, such as Siren Noire, an imperial stout aged
in bourbon barrels with Belgian coco nibs and vanilla
beans.
The Heavy Seas brewery location offers tours
(including occasional tours by Sisson himself), tastings,
full pours and special events. You can also visit the
Heavy Seas Alehouse, offering beer and pub grub at
locations in Baltimore and Arlington, Virginia. ♦
