Smith Mountain Lake to Lexington to Bedford and
meet in the morning to head out to a starting point."
Ms. Weiss says, "I have been hiking with the club
for three years and have made wonderful friends,"
including one more special than the others.
Ann Richards, one of the club's leaders, says most
of the members are retired, but the age range is 50s
to about 80 and "there is quite a range of physical
condition. Sometimes we all start out together with
the understanding that the short distance hikers will
return to their cars after one or two miles." Socializing
is also important: "We tend to be a good support team,
interested in each other."
Hiking is one of but a wide range of outdoor and
indoor activities available for retirees in this region,
many of the opportunities being inexpensive or free.
Parks and Recreation Departments all over the region
feature a wide variety of programs for older people,
including hikes, boating and day trips. The region's
