When President Hoover ushered
in Prohibition with the passage
of the 18th Amendment in
January 1920, he praised the
move as "a great social and
economic experiment, noble in
motive..." Hoover had no idea
that this "noble experiment"
which made the manufacture,
sale and transportation of
"intoxicating liquor" illegal,
would have some most ignoble
consequences. But who wants
to talk about bathtub gin,
speakeasies or the mob?

Here we are, a century later, appreciating spirits, as intended!
In this issue of Spirited Virginia we celebrate love, escaping, age and music!
Read about the joys of single ingredient simplicity In Love At First Sip. And
find plenty of product suggestions that will transport you to a warmer place in
Tropical Escapes. Check out 12 recipes for cocktails that will transport you to your
beach chair.
Does Age Really Matter? examines select scotches, tequilas, bourbons and
cognacs and provides 15 resounding yesses to this question. We celebrate the
Grammys in And The Winner Is with callouts to spirited song lyrics, and we hand
out a few awards of our own. Chocolate lovers will salivate over this issue's
featured product- chocolate-flavored spirits!
We're pleased to introduce two new departments: Distilleries highlighting the
Commonwealth's very own manufacturers of distilled spirits, and Gift Guide
featuring a themed selection of products perfect for your perfect someone.
On a personal note, this is my last Chairman's Message to you. It has been a great
honor to serve you and the Commonwealth in this capacity, but at this point in
life, I must dedicate more time and energy to my personal business.

My first day with Virginia ABC occurred in 2006 under then-Governor Kaine; I
was appointed Chairman of the Board by then-Governor McAuliffe in 2014 and
Chairman of the newly created Authority by Governor Northam in 2018. I am
