Host a potluck. Sure, nothing
new about potlucks, but in
this version, everyone brings a
drink to pair with their dish-
or a dish made with liquor. Pair
an appetizer with an apéritif.
Bring bourbon-barbecue
meatballs accompanied by
the same bourbon used in the
recipe. Make a minty dessert
accompanied by a Grasshopper
cocktail, a pound cake drizzled
with chocolate liqueur, or bring
a digestif to finish off the meal.
Organize a progressive cocktail
party. Like the pot luck, except
the host of each stop prepares
the food and liquor pairing,
or partners with someone to
present the dynamic duo.

Sailor Jerry for the evening;
dress up like an "Aristocrat"
or the Deep Eddy gal; wear
traditional Russian garb for
vodka, a leprechaun for Irish
whiskey, a buck costume
for Jägermeister; be Ernest
Hemingway for a Daiquiri or
don a traditional Mexican dress
for a Margarita. And, of course,
bring the bottle and mixers to
go with your costume!

Throw a cocktail-making class.
Go pro and join your friends
for a mixology class at a
local cooking school or pay a
bartender to teach the basics
of making cocktails at home.
Or let each friend volunteer
to master and demonstrate
a specific technique and/or
cocktail and present their
lessons to the group.
Make a "homemade" liquor.
You're not distilling, of

course, because that would
be illegal, impossible and/
or downright dangerous! But
you can take a legally made
spirit and enhance it. As
host, gather the ingredients,
containers and utensils to
enable each guest to create
his or her own infused liquor
or mixer. Infuse a spirit, such
as berries in vodka, pineapple
in rum, rosemary in gin or
vanilla in moonshine. Make a
liqueur like coffee, almond or
limoncello. Since guests will
need to take their creations
home to "age," have some
ready to enjoy the day of,
along with finger foods and
other drinks.
Whichever new holiday
experience you choose, be sure to
include sufficient food and water,
low-alcohol options and noalcohol mocktails to keep spirits
bright and guests safe. And,
don't forget to designate a driver
or ride share with your fellow
partygoers.
