hiskey has deep roots in
Southwest Virginia, in the Blue
Ridge Highlands and Heart of Appalachia.
Especially during Prohibition, whiskey
production, consumption, and trade
seeped through this mountain region.
"Some of the biggest houses on our
main strip in downtown Floyd ... were
built with the all mighty money from
moonshine," says Brian Fisk of Five Mile
Mountain Distillery. "Old timers from
these parts tell stories of hills so covered
in moonshiners' fires that they resembled
fireflies rising out of the meadows on a
summer night. Or how they would back
their cars all the way up the windy onelane road of Five Mile Mountain to load
their trunks with whiskey so they could
barrel through the brigades of police cars
coming to break up the party. Here in
Floyd County, the stories of moonshining,

either making it or running it, are as
rich as the historic vein of Appalachian
music that pulses through Floyd-and
we are proud of it!"
Several distilleries continue that
proud tradition, nearly a century
post-Prohibition. But these makers
are entirely legal, and they're eager to
share their products with consumers!

A Davis Valley Distillery,

Rural Retreat

The same folks who turn grapes into
wine at Davis Valley Winery turn grains
into liquor at Davis Valley Distillery.
The Blue Ridge Mountains provide a
beautiful backdrop for enjoying both
the fruit of the vine and the spirits.
Those same mountains provide
pure mountain limestone water and

grains sourced from local farms for
the distilling process. The distillery's
various liquors use corn, wheat, rye,
and malted barley.
At the distillery tasting room and
store, look for Davis Valley Distillery's
90-proof Original Recipe Appalachian
Moon moonshine and the same 'shine
in fruit flavors-Strawberry Pie, Apple
Pie, Peach Pie and Cherry Pie. You'll also
find Virginia Frost Vodka and several
whiskies- Owen Cox Heritage Bourbon,
Owen Cox Mountain Maple Whiskey and
Samuel Franklin Solera-Aged Whiskey.
Besides making and marketing its
own products, the distillery also crafts
and sells wholesale liquor to other craft
distilleries in China, New York, Florida
and other locales.
