Five Mile Mountain
Distillery, Floyd

Like the town of Floyd where the
distillery makes its home, Five Mile
Mountain Distillery takes the best
of tradition and combines it with
contemporary creativity.
The building that houses the distillery
and tasting room is historic, built soon
after World War II to provide water to
the town's businesses and residents.
The Five Mile Mountain Sweet
Mountain Moonshine is clearly a salute
to history. "Our corn and barley recipe
is an old recipe we were gifted from a
local moonshiner," says Brian Fisk. "This
recipe has been around a long time
and is very traditional to our region. We
have spent some time refining it a bit
to bring out some flavors and aromas
we wanted to be present, while still
maintaining a smooth feel." Further, the

moonshine is created with traditional
copper stills on open flames.
The moonshine also comes in
creative flavors such as Elderberry,
Lemon Ginseng, and Vanilla Plum. This
fall, the distillery plans to release a rye
whiskey, aged in new American charred
oak barrels and bottled at 105 proof.
The Floyd tasting room and store
offers cocktails and samplings, bottles,
and swag.

Law's Choice,
Penhook

The region's moonshining heritage
really shines at Law's Choice. Henry
Law, owner and operator, is a thirdgeneration moonshiner and master
distiller from rural Franklin County,
which was known as "The Moonshine
Capital of the World." For nearly a

century, the Law family was involved
in the illicit moonshine business.
Today, Henry Law continues the
family business creating and selling -
legally - Law's Choice Hell's Holler 100%
wheat whiskey. He uses time-honored
techniques, the way his family made it
before him.
But Henry Law is taking the family
name further than any bootlegging
vehicle could've transported it back in
the day. He has appeared, as himself,
on more than a dozen episodes of
"Moonshiners" with Tim Smith in the
2019 and 2020 seasons.
Although Law's Choice doesn't offer
a public tasting room, customers can
pick up a bottle at their local ABC store,
on shelves or by request.
