* Courage & Conviction Sherry Cask,
Virginia Distillery. This 100% malted
barley whiskey is matured in former
Spanish sherry casks. Finishing yields
a seductively rich aroma of raisin
and dried cherry and a big finish with
vanilla, bitter chocolate and espresso
tones.
* Courage & Conviction Cuvée Cask,
Virginia Distillery. The 100% malted
barley whiskey, matured in specialty
Cuvée casks, offers aromas of plum,
dark raspberry, chocolate torte, and
clove; flavors of tart cherry, blood
orange, cocoa and burnt sugar; and a
finish with candied walnuts and ginger.
* Glenmorangie Extremely Rare 18 Year
Scotch. The whiskey spent its first 15
years in American white oak bourbon
casks, then 30% was transferred to
Oloroso sherry casks. The 30% and 70%
were reunited and bottled. The sherry
influence is evident in a rich fragrance
and honeyed, faintly peaty finish. Expect
a nose of citrus and stewed fruits,
a palate of nectarines, peaches and
cream, and butterscotch, and an oaky
finish with dark sugar.
* Glenfiddich Grand Cru 23 Year. This
exclusive Glenfiddich expression has
been matured for 23 years in American
and European oak casks and finished
in rare French cuvée casks. Grand
Cru exudes aromas of apple blossom,
freshly baked bread and candied lemon,
with layers of rich vanilla oak, sweet
brioche, sandalwood, pear sorbet and
white grape on the palate.
* Laphroaig's 25 Year Scotch. This
happy marriage introduces Laphroaig
Scotch to European Oloroso sherry
casks and American bourbon barrels,
then bottled at cask strength. The color
is burnished gold, with a nose of initial
sherry sweetness followed by an Islay
peat tang. On the palate, a burst of peat
is restrained by sherry smoothness that
develops into a spicy apple fruitiness.
* Dad's Hat Pennsylvania Rye. The
robust rye clocks three months in Quady
Winery's Vya sweet vermouth casks,
creating a ruddy hue, a raisin aroma
and rounded notes of honey-soaked
dried fruit. The flavor of American
vermouth coupled with the smooth,
spicy rye delivers a distinctive taste and
character. Try it in a Manhattan.
* Dulce Vida Extra Añejo Tequila. The
limited-edition tequila matured for five
years in merlot and cabernet barrels
from Rombauer Vineyards. The result:
a burnished gold hue and remarkable
complexity, with honey, caramel,
orange and red berry notes, and a lick of
peppery heat.
* Angel's Envy Port Barrel Bourbon.
Several Angel's Envy whiskies are
finished in ruby port pipes, including
this velvety toffee sipper, which has
hints of rounded red fruit on the long
finish. Pair it with dark chocolate.
* Woodford Reserve Sonoma-Cutrer
Finish. Time in pinot noir barrels from
Sonoma-Cutrer winery in California
gave this whiskey a rosy tinge and a
surprising earthy flavor. Coconut and
vanilla overlap with a touch of dark fruit
on the finish. The winery also aged some
of its pinot noir in Woodford Reserve
Bourbon barrels.
