The new 95,000-square-foot
Virginia ABC administrative
headquarters has more than 500
workstations and offices. It features
noise masking, so employees can
work more efficiently. Print centers
on each floor reduce wasted time
away from the desk. Office setups,
including desks and chairs,
are ergonomically designed. The
building also offers abundant
natural light, which benefits
employee health and morale-a
national survey found that workers
ranked " access to natural light " as
their top workplace perk. The new
headquarters offers food trolleys,
grab-and-go concessions and break
rooms.
To improve meeting capabilities,
the space offers multiple
conference rooms with wireless
video-sharing capabilities as well
as huddle rooms for informal

collaborative meetings for small
groups.
The new site also includes a
conceptual store. This space will be
used to test store layouts, product
displays and other items that
impact store operations. Resulting
improvements will benefit both
store employees and customers.

Processing and Handling
The " new and improved " moniker
shines brightest in the distribution
center, with features that make an
efficiency expert green with envy.
Increased distribution center
operational efficiencies ensure
that ABC continues to provide a
reliable source of revenue to the
commonwealth while improving
service to ABC stores-and thus
to customers.
The new facility was built for
today's needs and with room to
grow. The new distribution center
(DC) is approximately 37% larger
than the previous ABC distribution
center in Richmond. With the
move, distribution center space
has grown from 292,285 square feet
at the Hermitage Road location
products that are constantly
entering and leaving the
distribution center, it has 10
inbound receiving doors and
10 outbound shipping doors,
expandable by five doors each.
This means that current outbound
shipping capacity is up to 45,000
cases in an eight-hour shift, with
future outbound shipping capacity
up to 67,000 cases. The distribution
center lot includes 75 trailer spots
for dedicated fleet rather than
relying on a dedicated-carrier
offsite lot.
Material handling equipment
and distribution center
management software have been
replaced with state-of-the-art
technology. For efficient storage,
the distribution center uses
high-density storage racking. The
distribution center includes an
automated case dispenser that
will allow one staff member to
ship ABC's top 50 items. It utilizes
two pick modules-one two levels
high and the other three levels
high. These multilevel, engineered
racking systems are designed
to move products efficiently
throughout the fulfillment
operation.
The space also includes a
bottle-pick area to ship licensee
and online orders to stores and,
eventually, directly to customers.
