ROANOKERS LOVE TO HATE THESE BUILDINGS
The following buildings get a lot of criticism, but one or two
have actually made the list of favorites (the Taubman, especially).
Martha Chester chose not to publicly pick a "Loves to Hate"
building because "I don't want to become the architect that everyone loves to hate."
Here's what our architects think on the dark side.
Richard Rife
I've had several people ask me why South 16 at the Bridges was
designed to look like a bunch of shipping containers standing on
end. I tell them that the building is not yet complete. I don't dislike
the building and appreciate that the developer chose an aesthetic
that was new and unique to Roanoke.
Raleigh Court Branch Library does not understand its place as
part of the Raleigh Court neighborhood. It violates the established
building setback by being too close to the street and looming over
the sidewalk, creating an uncomfortable experience for pedestrians in what is otherwise a very pedestrian-friendly neighborhood.
Craig Balzer
The Taubman Museum probably tops most folks' list and I
believe the South Peak development with its strip mine sites, ridiculous retaining walls and in-your-face commercial architectural
statements ranks a close second.
Theresa Dorlini
People love to hate the Taubman, but I simply love it. I'm proud
that Roanoke is home to a building designed by world renowned
architect, Randall Stout.
Top: South 16 building

N&W. Re-purposing of the building as a graduate center was a bold
move for the City of Roanoke and a symbol of its evolution from
an industrial town to a technology-driven city.
Future: Taubman Museum of Art design is futuristic, but its scale,
industrial-inspired materials, and re-use of building façades along
Market Street helps it fit into the historic area and the railroad shops.
Its bold use of forms and materials say that Roanoke is not afraid
to take risks. It presents a strong image of the future and represents
the city's confidence and vision to move forward.
CRAIG BALZER, BALZER ASSOCIATES
Past: The Williamson Road "strip" complete with its unadorned,
non-detailed architectural building stock speaks to me so much
about the past. It is a response beginning in the late 1920s to the
growth of our area and uncontrolled development. This includes
all the buildings with no sense of architectural significance, closely
built next to the road, telephone poles and wires everywhere, and a
roadway that provided area residents with a place "to cruise."
