Soon the eight excited balloon riders and I find ourselves at Lake Chris
Greene, just north of Charlottesville,
watching a remarkable creation. Our
balloon is one of four going up. First,
the balloons are just long, colorful curtains stretched out on the grass. The
wicker baskets are lying on their sides.

At 3,400 feet, Boar's Head Ballooning
owner and pilot Rick Behr says: "Now we've
got bungee jumping cords for whoever
wants them." Nervous laughter.

slowly produce four enormous sideways balloons.
Behr heads up the operation with
our 10-person balloon, offering extra
jackets for warmth, cracking jokes and
confidently igniting the pilot light.
