start speaking – just make up lines. He
would always decide it was his turn to
talk, and he would talk about nothing.”
Perhaps the most significant personnel change came with the recasting of Patricia Neal’s role, who, despite
her pitch-perfect performance as
Olivia, was not invited back for the
weekly “Waltons” series.
“We had always assumed that
Patricia wasn’t interested in doing a
series,” recalls Judy Norton, “and
Patricia at one point said they never
asked. And whether they did not ask
because they thought she would not
want to do it, or she wouldn’t be up to
the rigorous demands of a series, I have
no idea.”
In her place, producers chose 33
year-old Michael Learned, a relative
unknown who was 13 years Neal’s
junior. As husband to this muchyounger version of Olivia, CBS execs
cast 43-year-old Ralph Waite, a former
Presbyterian minister and a divorced
father of three. “I think Michael Learned
and Ralph Waite, the chemistry
between the two of them – and
between them and the children – was
very special,” says Norton.
“I called Ralph about a year ago,”
observes Michael Learned, “because a

the top. By the end of the program’s first
season, the series was regularly finishing
near the top in the weekly Nielsen ratings, garnering a respectable Top
Twenty showing for the overall 1972-73
season. By the following year, the series
ranked second in the annual Nielsen
ratings, well on its way to a startling nineyear run.
But network numbers aside, says
Mary McDonough, likely the greatest
testament to the series’ success can be
found in its lasting appeal among
Southern audiences, the very families it
hoped to depict.
