C Marking Time: Country Roads Historical Markers Debut in Pigeon Forge Library Director Marcia Nelson and historian Veta King unveil the Iron Works marker. Pigeon forge, Tenn., near the Great Smoky Mountains, recently unveiled the first in a series of new historical markers. This premier marker – Pigeon Forge Iron Works, How Pigeon Forge Got Its Name – memorializes the iron forge built in 1817 by pioneer Isaac Love. This forge and the throngs of passenger pigeons that flocked to the area centuries ago led to the town’s twopart name. Two other markers focus on Pigeon River Railroad and Fort Wear. Subsequent additions will commemorate events and landmarks, and will be stops on the town’s auto tour. These markers were developed by Pigeon Forge Historian Veta King, and Library Director Marcia Nelson. “I hope those who read these distinctive markers will pause to reflect on the rich history of our fun-filled vacation destination,” says King. –Jo harris DIgItaL eDItIon exCLusIVe: FLoatIng on mountaIntops BRC Click to read our digital edition exclusive story about hot air ballooning! 24 | BlueRidgeCountry.comhttp://BlueRidgeCountry.com
