H The Gentle Trails of Cone Manor

the hike

the careful planning and building done by moses and bertha
cone has left 25 miles of gentle-terrain carriage roads.

when you were in school studying America’s industrial giants of the
late 1800s and early 1900s, you
most likely learned about Carnegie,
Vanderbilt and Rockefeller. However,
you probably were never told about
Moses H. Cone, a man who so cornered one part of the textile industry
that he came to be known as “The
Denim King.” It is said that he
owned and operated so many factories that his company supplied virtually every inch of the United States’
blue denim well into the mid-1900s.
With his fortune assured, and
wanting a refuge from his business
and a better climate for his ill health,
Cone moved to North Carolina’s Blue
Ridge Mountains near Blowing Rock,
eventually amassing an estate of
more than 3,600 acres. He and his
wife Bertha were some of the country’s earliest environmentalists and
sought to protect and enrich their
estate’s diversity with extensive
plantings of white pine, hemlock,
sugar maple and rhododendron and
close to 150 varieties of apple,
peach, plum and cherry trees.
Meadows were created not only for
sheep and cattle, but they and the
apple orchards were placed so as to
be pleasing to the eye when viewed
from their Manor House, completed
in 1905.
Cone recognized that deer were

Appalachians and imported herds
from farther north and kept herds in
‘‘deer parks’’ in the hope that their
number would grow and could then
be released into the wild. Obviously,
his experiment, and the resiliency of
the native deer, succeeded.
After Moses’ death in 1908, Mrs.
Cone continued to operate the
estate for 39 more years. Upon her
passing, the estate was willed to the
Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in
Greensboro. Two years later, the
property was donated to the
National Park Service and Blue Ridge
Parkway.

So, why is this information
included in a column about hiking?
It’s the way of introducing you to
one of the most important changes
for those of us who enjoy walking in
the outdoors that the Cones made to
their estate – the construction of 25
miles of carriage roads that wander
into every part of the property. All of
the roads are interconnected, so
numerous possibilities exist for extensive day-long hikes without ever
retracing your steps. Because these
roads were built for horses pulling
carriages, they rise and fall at gentle
grades, and the most difficult route

A craft shop is operated in the Manor House by the Southern
Highland Handicraft Guild (craftguild.org; 828-295-7938) and
during the warm months artisans demonstrate their skills on
the front porch. There is also a park service information desk
and bookstore. Recommended tours of the Manor House are
held on a scheduled basis. Check at the information desk (828295-3782) for dates and times.

The Blowing Rock Inn (blowingrockinn.com; 828-295-7921) was constructed
in the mid-1900s and its rooms may be rather small by today’s standards, but
the hosts have themed each room with stenciling and different furnishings so
that it feels more like staying in a B&B instead of a cookie-cutter motel room.
Located just a mile from the parkway, the rates range from $69-129, depending
on the season. A complimentary wine and cheese reception is even offered
during the heaviest visitation months.
