THE LATE ACTOR John Wayne
wanted to buy it. So did Duke
Power. But the late Moon Mullins
held firm on his resolve to keep
intact the collection of arrowheads
that he and his wife Irene spent
years collecting. Both prospective
buyers were interested in select
pieces and wanted to sell the rest.
Mullins, however, said "no sale."
Wayne Underwood, owner of
Mystery Hill in Blowing Rock, N.C.
and his wife Sharon had been
friends with the Mullinses and had
visited their movie theater in
Hickory, N.C. where they had their
arrowheads displayed. At one point
Underwood hoped the collection
would wind up at Mystery Hill, but
Mullins willed it to his close friends
Jerry and Peggy Williams. His only
condition was they keep the collection together.
About 10 years after Mullins'
death, Jerry Williams contacted
Underwood and said "Moon said if
we ever had a problem to call you."
He told him the state was taking
their property and they had no
place to move the massive
collection.
Underwood quickly asked him
two questions: "Would you be willing to sell it? Do you have a price?"
The two worked out a deal and
Underwood revealed plans to create
the Native American Artifacts
Museum on the bottom floor of the
Appalachian Heritage Museum at
Mystery Hill. Williams' only worry:
that space wouldn't be sufficient to
hold the displays and framed sets of
arrowheads totaling 50,000 pieces.
Underwood's eyes twinkle as he
tells he story. "Would you believe in
synchronicity? I measured my space
and it was 980 square feet. Then I
went and measured the space Moon
had. It was 980 square feet. It fit
within two inches of how he had
the exhibit set up."
John Wayne was among those who sought to own at least part of the original set
of some 50,000 arrowheads that were originally owned by Moon Mullins, and are
now housed at the Appalchian Heritage Museum at Mystery Hill, N.C.
The total collection is actually
250,000 pieces, but the remainder is
mostly stored in buckets and bins.
The 50,000 pieces are the prime
finds that Mullins and his wife chose
