stopping off to mail letters to have that special "Love
VA" cancellation - until the post office closed in
1946, says 66-year-old Lynn Coffey, the historian
of the community and author of 2013's "Appalachian
Heart" (backroadsbooks.com).
The remains of the last Love post office collapsed
about a decade ago. But the town is still known as
Love. And, as long as you use the right zip code,
letters saying "Love, Virginia" will get through.
Talk about tiny: "There are 81 people right now
and no stoplights, no stop signs," Lynn Coffey says.
"It's so small that when people come, we run up to
the road to the car to see who it is."
About the only business you'll find in Love these
days is the Royal Oaks Retreat, a collection of cabins
just off the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia's Nelson
County.
Royal Oaks occupies 17 acres. It features 13 cabins and chalets, renting for $105 and up, with
Jacuzzis, fireplaces, TVs with VCRs and DVD players plus efficiency kitchens and charcoal grills.
"We've stayed in just about every cabin that
they've had," Donna Tamplet says. "To me, it's kind
of between rustic and a little upscale from rustic."
Cabins 1 to 5 are pet-friendly, says Keith Smith,
the owner since 2004.
"A lot of people come here for romantic getaways," Smith says. "I basically try to get a feel for
what it is that they came here for, and I go to great
lengths to provide them what it is that they're looking for."
