C Va. Rail-Trail Nears Completion

Country
Roads

TIME WAS, THE RICH AND FABULOUS took rides on the Hot
Springs Branch, following close to the banks of the Jackson
River, reaching the Homestead Resort near the Virginia-West
Virginia border. This line of tracks, part of the Chesapeake and
Ohio Railway, in the early 1900s pulled both freight and parlor
cars through a narrow passageway, north of Covington, Va.
Today, the tracks are long gone and the train is a memory,
but a rails-to-trails project along the corridor offers pedestrians a
camera-ready combination of river views, cliffs and mountains
plus access to a swinging bridge and a wet-weather waterfall.
The Jackson River Scenic Trail has been in the works for
about a decade, says Chad L. Williams, director of the Alleghany
County Parks & Recreation in Covington.
"Before the county made the improvements, the surface was
for the most part grass and dirt, which was mud much of the
time," Williams says. "Now it is an accessible, crushed-packed
gravel surface that is good for biking, walking and strollers."
Stops include Intervale and Smith Bridge plus a place that
was once called Damron but is now known as Petticoat Junction.
Handsome benches line the route. So do numbered markers noting the mileage to the line's beginning at Covington.
About half of the trail was complete by 2012. Now, plans call
for finishing the project in 2014 through Natural Well, making it
about 15 miles long, ultimately connecting Covington to the
Bath County border.
The second annual Jackson River Scenic Trail Half Marathon,
10K and 1 Mile Family Fun Run takes place Saturday, June 28, in
conjunction with Covington's Cork and Pork Celebration.

Jackson River Trail will eventually
reach 15 miles in length.

Double Old School
Model A's at the Biltmore
Where better for the Model A Club of
America to form a line of about 200
of the classic Fords than the Blue
Ridge Parkway? And that's exactly
what the club did this past summer,
selecting the roadway for their everyother-year driving trek.
And what better spot to pause for
a photo than Asheville's equally classic
Biltmore Estate? Which is also what
the club did, meticulously lining up
the cars to surround the front lawn of
the 1895 home, to have the cars, all
built between 1928 and 1931, pose
for the lens of photographer Pamela
Herrick, who specializes in vintage
photography.
