Crane Creek Vineyards is
near Young Harris.

You'll find plenty of class - in a glass - with the
wineries of Tiger Valley in Rabun County; the mustsee beauty of the Crane Creek Vineyards near Young
Harris; and the Paradise Hills Resort, which recently
launched a winery to complement the getaway's spa
and massage treatments near Blairsville. "Guests can
stay, they can relax, and they can do a wine-tasting,"
says Paradise owner Ilke Lander. "It's a pretty inclusive experience."

WATER SPORTS: RIDE A JETOVATOR

Lance Markham pulled back the throttle of a 23-foot speedboat and raced down the center of
Lake Chatuge.
"Bass fishing is very good," Markham says. "And some of the best fishing is in the spring before
the lake starts to warm up."
Markham's Young Harris Watersports rents boats across a series of mountain-lined lakes in
Georgia, including Lake Chatuge as well as Lake Nottely, where Julio Abreu serves as sales director of North Georgia Watersports.
The Tennessee Valley Authority built both of these lakes. But, at 4,180 acres, Nottely is only about
half the size. "And it's a hidden jewel of North Georgia," Abreu adds. "It's under-boated and
under-fished."
North Georgia Watersports offers guided tours on Lake Nottely. It also boasts one of the few
places where you can ride a Jetovator, a new water-toy that makes you feel like you're flying as
you "ride the hose" of jet-packed water as much as 25 feet above the surface. -JT

For another kind of joy, soak in the salt-water
swimming pool of The Ridges Resort & Marina, a
laid-back retreat overlooking the banks of Lake
Chatuge, where an upscale restaurant called The
Oaks serves North Carolina trout while crowds
gather to watch wakeboarding at the Mountain Wake
Cable Park. Staying here, on a breezy Saturday morning, I sip coffee on the dock as waves lap the marshy
banks. And, for a moment, it seems, I am transported
to some distant coast.
HIDING AWAY at the heart of Helen, we spend a night

at the Helendorf Inn and Suites, overlooking the
Chattahoochee. This tiny town in White County has
grown into one of my favorite retreats; it's an old
logging village that decided to recast itself as "Alpine
Helen." Now, about 40 years since being born again,
Helen is like a little piece of Germany in Georgia,
where you can enjoy authentic Bavarian food after
spending a half-day tubing trip on the Chattahoochee
River.
Helen's rapids are fun for frolics but, frankly, fall
flat in the face of the Bull Sluice, a Class IV wonder
at the Chattooga River's border of Georgia and South
Carolina. "It's just an untamed river," says frequent
visitor Mark Heekin of Charlotte, N.C. "A lot of
