days of my childhood - like the 1923 Bon Marche
Building, which now houses Haywood Park Hotel.
Bon Marche was a popular department store in this
space until it moved to another location on Haywood
Street in 1937. I remember shopping in the late 1960s
and early '70s with my mother and aunts in this building when it was Ivey's and loved the variety of floors
and also the "bargain basement."
I also have memories of buying dresses at Winner's
and John Carroll, eating at Woolworth's lunch counter
see how they transformed an old auto
shop into an amazing beer garden and
restaurant. DJs spin tunes on some nights
with their house band cranking up the
volume on Wednesdays. Also one of the
best bets in town for late night dining -
the kitchen is open until 2 a.m. every
night of the week.

titles on the tiny tableside jukebox machines during
meals at Brown's Café.
With the exception of Woolworth's, all of these
places are just memories now, and even Woolworth's
has evolved from the five-and-dime store of my childhood to a consignment art gallery filled with paintings,
jewelry, sculpture and up-cycled items like notepads
fashioned out of beer cartons. The soda fountain

Sky Bar - Ride the 1920s-styled elevator
in the Flat Iron Building on Battery Park
Avenue and step out on the balconies of
the Sky Bar. This is a magnificent spot to
catch a sunset while sipping a drink with
friends. From this perch you can see
Asheville and the surrounding mountains from a totally different angle.
