Below: French Broad River Paddle Trail runs
for 140 miles.
The beauty of the trail is you can easily pick and
choose what sections to navigate, with each of the
campsites spaced about 12 to 15 miles apart and offering a different experience. If you put in near Rosman,
it's an easy paddle to Riverbend near Brevard, the
southernmost campsite where serene flatwater has
some of the best fishing in the state.
Continuing down the trail, Firefighter Island is
across from Asheville's Biltmore Estate and where
you're mostly likely to spot other paddlers and campers. North of Asheville, especially near the Hot Springs
area, you'll encounter thrilling Class II-IV rapids.
Along the way look for beavers, deer, herons, bald
eagles and even albino squirrels scurrying along the
riverbanks. The remote Evan's Island is the trail's
northernmost campsite and an ideal spot to soak up
the area's quiet solitude and marvel at the towering
mountains that rise straight from the riverbanks.
STAY:
Most of the campsites along the trail have toilets, and
a few have picnic tables and fire rings. If you'd prefer
to spend the night in a comfy bed after a day of paddling, a good place along the trail to make a pit stop
is Firefighter Island, located across from Asheville's
Biltmore Estate, where luxury rooms await at the Inn
on Biltmore Estate. A less expensive option is the
trendy new Aloft Hotel Downtown.

PLAY:
Cycle through the forested hills of upstate S.C. near
Greenville along a series of winding, quiet county
roads under the shadow of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
The leafy, largely car-free network of roads offers a
variety of cycling conditions, with challenging hills
along with blissful downhill straightaways. If hiking
is more to your liking, Table Rock and Chimney Rock
state parks are both nearby, with miles of trails, scenic
overlooks and glistening lakes.
All this lush, unspoiled nature is only about 20
miles from Greenville, a charming town with a bustling Main Street filled with shops, restaurants and
bars. Greenville has done a great job of integrating the
area's natural beauty into its downtown, especially at
scenic Falls Park, which features walking trails, picnic
areas, and the 380-foot Liberty Bridge that overlooks
Reedy River and waterfalls. For an activity that's a
little more adrenaline-inducing, head to Greenville's
BMW Performance Driving School, where you can
drive a brand new BMW sport coupe through a series
of challenging obstacle courses and speed tests.
STAY:
Those leafy, quiet roads just outside Greenville are
where retired 17-time Tour de France competitor
George Hincapie often trained for his races. Hincapie
