40 Years of Conservation
Thank you for mentioning Southern
Appalachian Highlands Conservancy
and our "For Love of Beer &
Mountains" partnership with
Highland Brewing Company in the
March/April issue. As we celebrate
40 years of protecting the mountains of Western North Carolina and
East Tennessee, we hope your readers might like to know about our
upcoming anniversary celebration
at Highland Brewing on May 15; our
Community Farm open house on
June 7; and our June Jamboree on
June 14 - a day of free, guided outings in the Highlands of Roan. More
info about these events is available
on our website at Appalachian.org.
Looking forward to the next 40
years of conservation, we want to
honor the tenacity of our members
and volunteers, whose passion for
the Appalachian Trail grew into the
protection of more than 63,000
acres across the Southern
Appalachian mountains. -Angela
Shepherd, Southern Appalachian
Highlands Conservancy, Asheville,
N.C.

Smallest Church

June 2013 issue dedicated to the state. One
thing mentioned - the
claim of Our Lady of the
Pines in Thomas to be the
smallest church in the 48
states - may well not be
true. We've visited
Christ's Chapel near
Brunswick, Ga., which
also lays claim to the
"smallest" title. The 1949
structure is 10 feet by 15
feet, whereas the West
Virginia church is 11 feet
by 16 feet. -Larry and
Agnes Shank, Floyd, Va.

Strange Red Boxes in the Photos
Coming away from reading the March/
April issue of Blue Ridge Country, I
have the feeling of not being invited to
the party. Please look to your target
readership who live (or wish they did)
in peaceful mountain hollows.
Unreachable by wireless signals, we
consider live streaming to be the
sound of water over reads, and read
BRC for escape from tweets, clicks and
other invasive sensory assaults.
I don't want to require an IT person
to help me enjoy BRC any more than I
want to be run over by Deputy Barney
Fife, driving his black-and-white squad
