authentic. Floors are antique. Walls are finished
with a milk-paint look. The Chestnut Cabin has a
wood-burning fireplace (as well as air conditioning
and heat), as does the Hickory Cabin, which also
has an outdoor fireplace located in a spacious outdoor porch overlooking the pastures and woods.
Both cabins have Jacuzzi tubs, oversized showerheads and well-equipped morning kitchens.
The cottages are lovingly restored bungalows
that have fully equipped kitchens, wireless Internet,
cable TV, washers and dryers and the same luxurious
sheets that the Gottfrieds bought for all the beds.
"We went overboard on the sheets." Bev says.
"People are just in love with the linens. We wanted
everything we did to be quality. I wanted them to
be upscale but yet comfortable."
All of the cottages have names too. The Cooper
Cottage has an outdoor fireplace in the covered
breezeway between the cottage and an enclosed
garage. Guests often build a fire at night to watch
as they talk and watch the fireflies that light up the
night. The master bedroom of the Morgan Cottage
opens up onto a covered porch. The headboard of
the queen-size bed in the pet-friendly Parker
Cottage was once the soundboard of an upright
piano. "So you can lay there and strum the strings,"
Bev says.
The cabins and cottages are full of other whimsical features. The hinges in the cabins are reproductions of antique filigreed hinges. The doors carry
big tiger's eye-doorknobs set into large, square
antique-looking locks. Myron is a gifted woodwright who did much of the interior work, as did
the "family secret weapon," a Mennonite carpenter
who works wonders with wood.
Bev rarely has to mention the attractions that
bring guests to her property, eight miles from downtown Asheville. But when she does, she commends
the city's burgeoning independent restaurant scene,
as well as its several breweries. There are hiking,
biking, fishing, ziplining and other activities, as well
as the Biltmore House and excellent shopping and
spa hopping.
And of course, there are the simple pleasures of
being on the farm itself, starting with the pastures
and their contented residents. "Samson loves to pose
for pictures," Bev says. If he sees a bride at the fence,
he's all over it because he knows she's got a tasty
bouquet."
