After retiring in 2010, Lester and Diane Aradi traveled from their
home in Florida through several Southeastern states looking for
a farm to operate an animal rescue.
"We told God that if we found the right piece of land, we
would give back to animals that needed our help," Lester Aradi
recalls.
The couple found a 35-acre farm in Blue Ridge, Ga., and put
their plan into action. Their first rescue was a retired racehorse
named Haggis that was discarded and left to starve. After adopting
Haggis, the Aradis added several more rescued horses to their
herd, including an abused horse named Razor and Beau, a
Tennessee Walking Horse with severe separation anxiety.
"It's our way of giving back," Aradi says.
Over time, Horse Creek Stable has added goats, bees and a
pack of rescue dogs as well as a rotating crew of horses, alpacas
and llamas thanks to their role as foster parents for Georgia
Equine Rescue League and Southeast Llama Rescue.
The farm doesn't just open the pasture gates to animals in need.
Guests are welcome to spend the night in the carriage house.
"There are an awful lot of people who love animals and want
to spend time with them in a secluded place where there is no
noise from an ice machine or elevators dinging or televisions
blaring in the next room," Aradi says.
With just one room available, Horse Creek Stable often has a
waiting list for reservations. During their stay, overnight guests
help out with farm chores and feast on farm-to-table breakfasts
prepared daily from the seasonal bounty grown on the farm. The
best part of spending time at Horse Creek Stable is nuzzling the
llamas and feeding sweet treats to the horses.
Last year, the farm started allowing the public to visit, no
overnight stay required.
"It touches our hearts to see people light up when they're here,"
says Aradi.
