the 1970s, a high-school hangout with a jukebox.
Donna Husband, who owns it now, gets a lot of visitors who tell her stories like, "this is where I met my
spouse" - it's pretty special to a lot people."
Husband is from Richlands, Va., and moved to the
town of Bramwell after she married. She ran into the
owner one day, and decided to buy the building, "sell
ice cream and a few gifts - no big deal."
Instead, she started researching and visiting soda
fountains, re-fabricating the building, pulling up the
tile floor, renovating the fountain, and now they do
ice cream (homemade) but also real cokes - "cherry
Cokes, vanilla Cokes, lemon Cokes" - sodas with ice
cream floating in flavored, carbonated water with
whipped cream and a cherry on top. Some of their
guests "haven't had one since they were young."
It's not just sodas, though. The menu includes biscuits and gravy, cobblers, burgers, homemade French
fries, chicken and dumplings. The cook, Elizabeth
Allemeier, was born in Welch, W.Va., the daughter
and granddaughter of a coal miner. The family moved
to California when she was two, then she went to
Washington State in '89 and opened a florist. In 2005,

she and her husband retired and moved back to
Bramwell.
Allemeier learned to cook from her mother. Eight
siblings meant she helped in the kitchen. Her mother,
Penny, is 90 years old and splits her time among those
nine children - "we have to fight over her - we love
our mom!" - and they all still spend time at the family
farm in McDowell County, which also supplies berries
and fruits for the restaurant.
"She taught me always to stir your gravy - never
stop. Stir until it's done. Not to cook on too high a
heat. She taught me how to use an iron skillet for frying chicken."
Allemeier's chicken and dumplings sell out. "It's
part my mom's and part Donna's mom's," she says.
Allemeier is Polish, but her aunt was Hungarian, and
she taught her how to make sticky dumplings.
Allemeier loves those, but loves "fluffy biscuit dumplings" even more, and so she tweaked the recipe. "The
Hungarian way was just egg and flour - that's it." You
put it into boiling water "until it floats." The fluffy
dumplings include self-rising flour, Crisco shortening
- "just a little bit" and chicken stock. The stock is
