the view, Gilbert says. In 1783, Thomas
Jefferson described the view from that spot
as "worth a voyage across the Atlantic," so
there's no doubt it's worth hiking up a
couple flights of stone steps for.
In addition to tours, the NHP offers a
wide range of living history and museum
exhibits, demonstrations and reenactments
throughout the year that offer
insight into 19th-century life and the pivotal
role that Harpers Ferry played during
the Civil War and in educating freed slaves
at Storer College, one of the first integrated
schools in the country.

and pub on the first floor of the Heritage
House, which offers a wide range of breakfast,
lunch and dinner options - all of
which are available all day, every day,
according to owner Karan Townsend. "You
can have eggs and bacon at 9 p.m. and panfried
rainbow trout at 9 a.m.," she says.
Other Town's Inn specialties include
homemade Belgian waffles, Shepherd's pie
and fiesta stew, a hearty dish made with
chicken, beans, corn and tomatoes.
A visit to Shepherdstown isn't complete
without breakfast at Betty's Restaurant.
While summer is by far the most popular time of
year to visit Harpers Ferry, every season in the historic
town has its charms. "Mother Nature is here during
every season in full splendor - it makes no difference
what time of year it is," says Dennis Frye, chief historian
at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. "It's
always colorful here - even in the deepest, darkest
days of winter there's always a hue in the air."
"January, February and March can be great times
to come to Harpers Ferry," says Cindi Dunn, a member
of the Harpers Ferry Merchants Association and
the owner of The Vintage Lady, a retail shop in town.
Most of the town's inns, bed-and-breakfasts, restaurants
and shops are open year-round, though some
shut down during weekdays in the wintertime, she
adds. The Harpers Ferry National Historical Park is
open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, year-round, except
for Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year's
Day.
The popular "O' Be Joyfull" historical tours and
Ghost Tours of Harpers Ferry, led by living historian
Rick Garland, likewise, take place all year long.
"It's charming here in the winter, you won't see
the crowds that you will during the summer," says
Dunn . "And I promise you, there's nothing prettier
than Harpers Ferry with a light blanket of snow."
By day, Harpers Ferry may be a picturesque town
with a rich historical legacy, but by night, a darker
side of the town emerges as living historian Rick
Garland leads visitors through the streets of Lower
Town while telling tales of the town's turbulent past.
Based on real historical events that took place in the
town, Garland's Ghost Tours of Harpers Ferry give
visitors a peek into Harpers Ferry's long and often
bloody history - the remnants of which some say
are still haunting the town today.
Garland says his tours are appropriate for all ages;
however, he warns that they're meant to be spooky,
and many of the stories include elements of violence
and death. Held year-round, the tours last approximately
an hour and a half. -MS
