year's crop have already formed.
The last woodland flower is witch
hazel, which blooms in November's
barren woods.
Between March and November,
though, a continuous yellow thread
weaves together the growing season
within its warp and weft: in tall sunflowers'
drooping heads and the
small uplifted faces of Johnny jumpups;
in coreopsis, cosmos and calendula;
black-eyed Susan, daylily,
marigold and goldenrod. Some yellows
are ruddy, some watery, some
bold. Some are lemony, some gold.
Some are mellow. Some, but not all.
No less are vegetable gardens
endowed with gold: in summer
beans and Yukon gold potatoes; in
the golden rain snow peas I grew for
the first time last year and will again
come spring. In orchards's abundance
as well: in Grimes Golden apples and
luscious peaches that blush in baskets
hauled to farmer's markets when
summer succumbs to fall.
It always amazes me that the yellows
revealed as chlorophyll factories
flicker out in autumn were there all
along, hidden by the green. If the
golds of spring are hard hues for
nature to hold onto, so too are these
fleeting golds, in hickory and maple,
tulip poplar, birch and beech. Once
they're released, leaves' brilliance lingers
little longer than fireworks on

the Fourth. One day you're walking
through a suds of golden leaves that
sift and scatter in the slightest breeze.
Then a hard rain falls. The bright carpet
mats and dims. And before you
know it, the seed catalog deluge
begins. 
