Chattanooga Woodworking Academy offers a four-year program.

Inside the yellow pine cabin that houses Chattanooga
Woodworking Academy, one student smoothes a walnut
headboard as another painstakingly glues handmade
pegs into a chair of red and white oak harvested straight
from the forest.
"We do everything from Shaker style to Queen Anne,"
says Bill Carney, 66, who for 35 years has built custom
desks, highboys and four-posters for clients across the
U.S. Itching to teach, in 2012 he started the four-year
school, the only one in Tennessee and one of only a
handful in the South, in the Main Street art district.
"I see a big skill gap," he says. "There aren't hardly
any younger guys involved in this trade, and I certainly
don't want it to die."
Currently, 12 students age 19-41 are learning to create
classic pieces and run their own businesses. In two years,
they will be certified master woodworkers. "They're
beginning to see their dreams come to fruition," says
Carney, "which makes my dream come true."

The new Primland cottages offer
great views and privacy.

Bird-themed cottages
open at Primland
you might say Primland is going to the birds with its newly
nested cottages. Each chalet-like structure -
Hummingbird, Robin, Oriole and Bluebird - takes its
name from the songbirds seen and heard across the
12,000-acre Primland Resort. And each of the Fairways
Cottages boasts bird's-eye views of the rocky Pinnacles
of Dan and the Dan River Gorge.
These 16 new accommodations also overlook the
golf-course greens of The Highland Course, the
acclaimed centerpiece of this multi-faceted retreat near
the Blue Ridge Parkway in Patrick County, Virginia.
Besides golf, Primland offers shooting clays; horseback
riding; nature trails; mountain biking; hunting; fly fishing; and hiking on a restored six-mile section of the
Old Appalachian Trail.
Opening in 2015, the Fairways Cottages boast
breathtaking balconies plus luxurious living rooms
with flexible connections to bedrooms. Interior designs
reflect nature, simplicity, local art and the Europeanchic flavor of Primland's 26-room main lodge.
"There are four units, and each unit has a bedroom
in each cottage, and it's like 16 more guest rooms," says
Primland's vice president, Steve Helms. "There's an
entry level and a lower level. Flexibility is the key."
