Get Lost!
From Stephens City, I head down
Route 11 a little further, then cross
over into Hardy County, West
Virginia, with plans to explore Lost
River State Park, an isolated mountain woodland near Baker, where, if
you plan to stay the night, you better pack in your groceries.
The Lost River for which the park
is named isn't really "lost." It's actually the Cacapon River, which flows
underground at "The Sinks" just
north of Baker and then reemerges
north near Wardensville. But despite
the name of the park, Lost River does
not flow into it or adjacent to it but
is actually some two miles west.
I decide to "glamp" for the night
at one of the park's original cabins
built by the Civilian Conservation
Corps in the 1930s. It's a small and
rustic log structure along a dry creekbed with a deep roof overhang shading a pair of rocking chairs on the
front porch.
There's lots to do here for one
like myself who appreciates just
getting into the woods as far away
from anything as I can possibly get.
I take a steep zigzagging hike up
Laurel Trail and find a deciduous
forest rife with signs of black bears
- overturned rocks and logs scraped
clean of insects.
At the top of Razor Back Ridge,
the Laurel Trail intersects the Razor
Ridge Trail, which offers some leafshrouded mountain views to the east
before descending to its end near the
park swimming pool. Other good
hikes here include the meandering
trail along Howard's Lick Run and
the steep hike to Cranny Crow.
Even if you're not into hiking,
you can still enjoy the park's trails on
horseback. The riding stables are
open April through October.
Not too far from the park entrance
is the Lost River Artisans Cooperative
and Lost River Museum. The cooperative features the handiwork of
Spend the night in a CCC-built cabin at Lost River State Park.

from furniture making and weaving
to handmade glass jewelry and
woolen hats and shawls. The basement museum covers the agricultural history of the region with
displays of large looms, one of which
belonged to the local Tusing sisters,
two elderly Mennonite women born
at the turn of the last century who
resided in the area, harvesting their
own garden, raising their own livestock, hunting in the local woods,
and weaving their own cloth.
