At the height of World War II,
the valley surrounding Oak
Ridge,
Tennessee, lay
shrouded in secrecy. As
m a n y
Historian Ray Smith:
as 75,000
"[Workers] didn't have
a clue."
people
worked at government plants
making the ingredients for
atomic bombs. Yet they didn't
know what they were making. Or for what purpose.
"They would have only
known that they were working with uranium," says Ray
Smith, an Oak Ridge historian. "They didn't have a clue
what they were doing, but
they knew they were trying
something that was going to
win the war."
Today, the world knows
more about this "Secret City"
that lies near Knoxville.
And, coming up, you can
soon learn even more of those
secrets-thanks to the newly
established Manhattan Project National Historical Park.
This partnership between
the National Park Service
and the Department of Energy tells what it took to
win World War II by making
atomic bombs. That story includes details of the now-demolished K-25 plant, a building that sprawled across 44
acres at Oak Ridge-and what
was once claimed to be the
largest industrial complex in
history.
Uniquely, this park is being established in three locations, thousands of miles
apart. Besides Oak Ridge,
other sites are at Los Alamos,
New Mexico; and Hanford,
