WHEN YOU GO
The Hike: A moderate 14.4-mile hike near the Blue
Ridge escarpment in South Carolina that could be split
into two day hikes of 5.5 miles and 8.9 miles.
Getting There: Follow SC 28E westward for 8 miles
from Walhalla, bear right onto SC 107 and, if doing the
overnight hike (or on the second day hike), continue 3.2
miles, turn left onto Village Creek Road, go another 1.8
miles, bear right onto Nicholson Ford Road and leave
one car in the trailhead parking lot. Return to, and turn
left onto, SC 107. For those who want to place a car at
the end of the first day's hike, continue 7.2 miles, turn
left onto Burrell's Ford Road and go 3 miles to the Foothills Trail parking area on the left. From the intersection
of Burrell's Ford Road and SC 107, it is 1.6 miles to the
left turn onto Fish Hatchery Road, which is followed to
its end at the hatchery and trailhead parking lot.

The Hike
The "Trail Boys" were out on an overnight on the day of Leonard Adkins' hike.

As we walk the gently descending East Fork Trail,
Heyward informs me that
the 77-mile Foothills Trail
starts at Table Rock State
Park with views of the
Piedmont, ascends South
Carolina's highest point
on Sassafras Mountain,
swings around Lake Jocassee and parallels the Chattooga River for more than
eight miles before ending
in Oconee State Park. He
is relating that it possibly
has more waterfalls (close
to a dozen) than any other
trail of its length when he
stops so short I almost run
into him. An entomologist
by profession, he points to
an elaborately constructed
web strung across the trail
and informs me, "Spiders
expend so much energy
building a web that, if they
have to do any major reconstruction on it shortly after
originally building it, they
can exhaust themselves. In
fact, it takes so much out
of them to produce the silk
that they eat web parts that
are wearing out so that they
can reclaim some of the energy it took to produce it."
