Top Left: This is known as the old Eureka School in Grayson County, Virginia. It is in the Providence community. It was a one-classroom school for grades one through seven, and it was heated with a pot-belly stove. A lady who attended the school reports that it had two outhouses, one for boys and one for girls. Top right: This is known as the Phipps Store. It was built around 1918 by Fred Phipps and his brother Vance. It was operated as a store through several generations and also served as a post office at one time. It still has a working gravityfed spring, and the surrounding land is still being run as Fox Creek Cattle Farms. It is located in the Fox Community of Grayson County, Virginia. Lower right: Most people know this as the "Round House," but it is actually octagonal in shape. It was built in 1874 by Dan Idol near the Mouth of Wilson Creek in Grayson County, Virginia. It has survived two of the worst floods: 1916 and in 1940; in fact, it was the only structure left standing when the entire community of Wilson Creek was washed away. Left: This home was originally built in the early 1900s by the Dickerson family. It is located by the New River in Grayson County near Fries, Virginia. January/February 2017 55
