Turns out, Edgar and Kitten were celebrating their
60th anniversary. Edgar ordered broiled fish and vegetables, a thoroughly sensible meal. Kitten ordered French
toast with strawberries and whipped cream. Now that's
the order of a woman who is celebrating.

Since both Kitten and Edgar were
about the size of a house sparrow,
I'm sure eating out was a special
treat. As news spread of their accomplishment, their meal got more
festive. Other customers stopped by
their booth to offer congratulations.
I heard Kitten giggle when someone
asked Edgar about his "young bride."
When they called for their check, it
was nowhere to be found. Someone
else had paid.
When Kitten and Edgar stood
to leave, the remaining patrons applauded for them. I know they had
a lovely 60th anniversary. A hometown diner had given them an experience that could
not have been bested by the finest Parisian restaurants.
The food was good, but the kindness of strangers made
it extraordinary.
I am telling you, pancakes bring out the best in
people. 
