a cocktail in the retro Billy Bar while you
admire its mid-century decor and distinctive red fireplace.
You'll cover quite a bit of ground on
Sunday, but don't rush the gorgeous drive
through the Monongahela National Forest
on your way to Lewisburg, West Virginia.
A quaint town nestled in the Greenbrier Valley, Lewisburg is home to a surprising
number of notable venues. Its Greenbrier Valley Theatre is the state professional theatre of West Virginia, and Carnegie
Hall West Virginia is one of the country's
four Carnegie Halls that have continuously hosted live performances since the
Gilded Age. Both venues are in Lewisburg's
compact downtown and within easy walking distance of the French Goat, a modern
bistro with seasonal dishes inspired by
classic French cuisine. The food is on the
fancy side, and the dining room is cozy
with more than a couple playful touches-
starting with the restaurant's wry mascot.
Spend the night in Maison Marcel, a beautiful manor house situated a few minutes'
drive from downtown.
On Monday you'll take another gorgeous drive through George Washington
and Jefferson National Forest on your
way to Roanoke, Virginia, where the
Roanoke Symphony Orchestra will
perform "From the Heart" at St. Andrew's
Catholic Church. This installment of the
RSO's Destination Concert Series features
the company's string principals performing Prokofiev's "Sonata in F Minor,"
Shostankovich's "Sinfonia for Strings",
Dohnanyi's "Piano Sextet" and Gounod's
"Ave Maria" in one of the region's most
magnificent venues.
On Tuesday you'll set off toward Bristol, Virginia. In less than an hour you'll
come to the Blue Ridge Institute (see
its director's Guest column on page 74), in
Ferrum, Virginia. The Institute hosts rotating exhibits, but the real treasure is its Blue
Ridge Heritage Archives. Spend a halfhour or the whole day combing through
a collection that includes photographs,
video recordings and audio recordings of
completely authentic roots music.
