The heART of the Alleghany Highlands
THE ALLEGHANY HIGHLANDS is wellknown for its unique performing and visual
arts scene as well as its many artisans
whose talents reflect the rich history of the
region.
Built in 1857 and listed in the National
Register for Historic Places, Humpback
Bridge is the only bridge of its design in
the United States. No visit to the Alleghany
Highlands is complete without stopping to
admire this historic structure.
Just north of Covington is Falling
Spring Falls, a stunning 80' waterfall that
features a breathtaking view of the falls and
a picnic area.
The Historic Masonic Theatre has
undergone an extensive restoration
transformation and is now open with a
full range of entertainment, along with
the Masonic Amphitheatre. This vibrant
piece of our area's history is a true gem,
with numerous performances throughout
the year, classes and programs and rental
space for public events. Performances such
as Fiddlin' by the River Bluegrass Festival
can also be enjoyed at the River Rock
Amphitheatre.
The Alleghany Highlands Arts &
Crafts Center has something for everyone
who walks through their doors. From quilts,
photography, jewelry, pottery, paintings
and more, unique, handcrafted treasures
made by local artists fill the shop. Classes
are also available to those eager to learn.
Artists of all walks of life can come to
the Clifton Forge School of the Arts to
challenge themselves to learn a new art
form, or brush up on old skills. They will be
inspired by the peaceful mountain views
and beautiful waterways while taking one
of the 15+ courses the school offers to the
community.
The Alleghany Highlands Arts
Council works to bring unique performing
arts events to
the region. Furthermore, they provide
educational opportunities for the areas
youngest and up and coming performers.
Along the Cowpasture River, The Farm
at Glen Haven is a boutique, organic
hops farm and premiere event venue in
Alleghany County. Boasting over three
acres of wildflowers and a beautifully
refurbished barn, The Farm is a fairy tale
location for outdoor weddings, private
events and group retreats.
